Navigation – Topographic map, compass, GPS
Sun Protection – Sunglasses and/or hat, sunscreen
Insulation – Extra layers for an unplanned bivouac (a temporary camp without tents or covers)
Illumination – Headlamp or flashlight and extra batteries
First-aid Kit – Include gauze, latex gloves, antiseptic, scissors, and a splint at minimum.
Fire Starter – Butane lighter or waterproof matches for emergency heat. Place fire pits with caution.
Repair Kit – Knife, multitool, webbing, parachute cord, duct tape, etc.
Nutrition – At least an extra one-day supply of emergency nonperishable food.
Hydration – Carry extra water and the means to filter or purify more in an emergency.
Emergency Shelter – If not already traveling with a shelter, consider carrying extra protection from a storm, such as an emergency blanket or bivy, or tarp.
